BemLab Concept 2027 - Vibecoding for Music Education

In this semester, students find out together how to use vibecoding to sharpen our pedagogical thinking.

Students will explore how, through coding, we can design and develop simple applications for classroom use.

First, students collaborate to find common classroom challenges. Next, they design a problem-solving structure. This structure is then turned into an application.

The concept will be illustrated with the following applications:

  1. The Music Paint Machine: the version developed at IPEM in 2012 will undergo a remake in collaboration with the Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais (Brasil)
  2. The Music Tunnel, a first-person music game developed by Luc Nijs, using vibe coding (Claude code)

BemLab Concept 2026 - From unboxing to classroom use

In this semester, we explore together how to use a wide range of music technologies.

The idea is to develop our students' TPACK, i.e., an understanding that emerges from interactions among content, pedagogy, and technology.

We go through the whole process from unboxing, exploring, using artistically, to using the technologies as a pedagogical instrument. An important modus operandi is analyzing the underlying logic of the technologies and using that logic to design educational practice without the technology, so as to prepare for their use and establish real technology integration. In this way, we actively work on technology integration. Furthermore, hands-on experience with the technologies in combination with the reflective analysis allows connecting the pedagogical use of interactive music technologies to theoretical frameworks, including pedagogies, musicology and music psychology, and developmental psychology.

Roland Aira Compact

Roland Aira Compact

In this series of seminars, we explore the following technologies:

Odd Ball

Odd Ball

In this seminar, we explore the Odd Ball, a bouncy, motion-powered MIDI controller that lets you create music by tapping, throwing, or bouncing it.

The use of the Odd Ball allows for the integration of intuitive movement in a technology-supported music class. Connections can be made to the Dalcroze approach, in which the use of a ball is common.

Aeroband Pocket Drum 2 Max

Aeroband Pocket Drum 2 Max

The AeroBand PocketDrum 2 Max is an ultra-portable, "air drumming" electronic drum set that uses motion-sensing sticks and pedals to simulate a full drum kit without the physical footprint. We explore how to use this technology to develop rhythm skills

Dato Duo

Dato Duo

The Dato DUO is a collaborative, monophonic synthesizer and sequencer designed specifically for two people to play at once.

Bull Frog

Bull Frog

Bullfrog is a classical subtractive synthesizer – it consists of several “modules” for sound generation – VCO, NOISE GENERATOR - and treatment – VCF, VCA/DELAY, as well as “modules” that generate control and modulation signals to control them – ENVELOPE GENERATORS and SAMPLE & HOLD.

ROLI Seaboard

ROLI Seaboard

The ROLI Seaboard is a MIDI controller that replaces traditional mechanical keys with a continuous, pressure-sensitive silicone surface called a "keywave".
